The editor of one of most well-known newspapers in the Arab world; Al-Quds al-Arabi, Bari Atwan wrote on his Facebook page, that the next 48 hours will be crucial in modern history of the Middle East and the world.
At the moment, Obama holds a meeting with representatives of American military and political establishment, discussing the Syrian crisis after the use of chemical weapons by Assad in eastern Ghuta.
Atwan said that a probability of the use of force by Americans – without waiting for the results of the international independent investigation commission – is “very high”.
The American debates virtually coincide with a meeting between the military leadership of America, France, Britain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar on August 26 in Amman. According to The Sunday Times, a possible target of attack on the Syrian coast by the American navy as well as the no-fly zone for Assad have been agreed upon between Americans and Britons.
The next 48 hours will be decisive if Obama comes to a conclusion that Syria has “crossed the red line” and gives green light to bomb Syrian airports and military bases. This, in turn, could cause a chain reaction that will lead to the beginning of World War III, as Syria’s allies – Russia, Iran and China – will probably not sit idly by.
Meanwhile, Russia has already said it is not going to wage a war with anyone because of Syria. This statement was made on August 26 at a press conference by the criminal leader of Putin’s foreign ministry Lavrov.
“We’re not going to wage a war with anyone”, he said, answering a question what Russia undertakes if Western countries begin military strikes against Syria. According to him, the new act of intimidation, similar to that which took place in Iraq a decade ago, is aimed against Syria, but it is not yet possible to predict the developments of the situation.
“Making predictions is a thankless task. The intimidation campaign has already begun, the events in Iraq ten years ago and in Libya more recently began the same way”, Lavrov said, responding to a question if, in his opinion, there’ll be soon a strike on Syria.
In this case, the whole story about the use of chemical weapons in Syria is aimed at disrupting “the Geneva-2″, the Putin’s thug Lavrov claimed.
In turn, Bari Atwan writes that if the Syrian regime gets a guilty verdict, it will not stop before using its chemical weapons on a much larger scale against its opponents.
The Arab journalist said that the case could end up an all-out war in the third world, and all parties, and, above all, Russia and America need to start urgently the Geneva conference to find a political solution and solve the issue as quickly as possible.
For the Syrian regime, on the other hand, it is time to realize that it can not win a military victory, whatever it does, whatever weapons it uses, and how weak and fragmented the opposition is.
The situation was out of control before the use of chemical weapons, and the prospect of an American military intervention becomes more realistic, says the editor of Al-Quds al-Arabi.
